This year Google has topped Fortune’s ‘100 Best Companies To Work For’ for the sixth time. Fortune partners with an organisation called Great Place To Work and they claim to have the most extensive employee survey in America.
They send a Trust Index Employee Survey to a random sample of employees of each organisation on the list, and this makes up two thirds of the score. This covers such areas as management credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. The other third of the score comes from a Culture Audit, which covers such areas as pay and benefits. It also takes into account recruiting practices and training.
So why are Google employees disloyal?
So why is it that Google employees are among the least loyal in corporate America? Another survey, conducted by PayScale, found that Google had the fourth highest churn rate of large corporates with a median tenure of just 1.1 years. Interestingly the median age of the employees was the lowest in the top 20 at 29 and median pay was highest at $107,000.
There may be many reasons why this apparent paradox exists. However, the most likely answer is that a job at Google carries significant qudos and acts as a springboard to an even better position elsewhere. Google do not comment on this situation but it is clear that they have a problem, and one potential solution is to make working conditions as good as possible to improve retention or limit churn as much as possible.
So Google again top the polls as the best company to work for, but could it be that their reputation is so good with other companies that they have created a monster?
